my favorite Millennial Thing™ is when a group of us are standing around and talking and someone asks a question that no one knows the answer to and suddenly it’s a race to get out your phone and google it and be the first to know, and then someone starts reading the Wikipedia article about the thing aloud to everyone else, and what started as a casual conversation is now A Learning Opportunity and we all walk away a little more knowledgeable about a random topic

Like, Boomers hate when we do that, but I think it’s one of the best things about us.

So long as we have internet or a cell signal, all of the world’s collective knowledge is at our fingertips, and damned if we aren’t going to use it.

My dad always get mad when I do this. He’s always like “We didn’t need to know.” That makes no sense to me. Why would that make me ignore my ability to learn something? I don’t always *need* to know but that doesn’t mean I’m going to pass up an opportunity to learn something new.

Why carry a supercomputer around in your pocket if you’re not gonna use it?

I was a kid in the 90’s (I’m what Iliza Schlesinger calls an Elder Millenial), and I always asked about why something was how it was or why it was called that, and my dad always said things like “Just because” or “why did we name you Sarah?” Which was not a real answer and basically smooshed a good chunk of my curiosity (and my stepmom wondered why I wasn’t curious about things 😛 ).

The fact that I can get a real answer without a lazy snapback with virtually no effort is amazing. Though I still fall into the trap of asking someone first, that’s largely out of habit because the internet was not as easily accessible when I was a kid and old habits die hard.

Age/generational differences are wild! I’m oldest end Millenial, my mother’s oldest end Gen X, my dad’s a definite Boomer. I wanna learn the whys and hows. My mom wants to learn the whys and hows. My dad does not care if it isn’t within his limited interests (I mean, he watches the Weather Channel radar and finds it interesting..).

Tama is boss

THE TRAINS HAVE CARTOON TAMAS ON THEM

Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]

For those who haven’t read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. She’s now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.

Beautiful.

Now I’m crying thanks

and a new cat was hired right?

yep! her name is Nitama (essentially ”second tama” or “tama II”) and she served under Tama as an apprentice before being appointed her deputy

she works very hard

Everytime this crosses my dash, I reblog. It is the law.

Law

I’m crying at 11pm over train cats

Nitama, already now a mature cat (born 2010), has a protege named Yontama (fourth Tama, b. 2016).  There is no information available for either the physical befellment or tragic self-disgrace which has removed Santama from contention.

a legacy

I’d just like to add that there is a ‘Santama’, whose name was ‘SUNtamatama’ (the capitalisation is not my own, it’s in the actual name). They were sent to Okayama prefecture for station-master training. The Okayama PR rep Mister/Ms Y, who was looking after SUNtamatama then refused to let go of the cat, saying something along the lines of, “This child is ours and I will not let them go, they will stay in Okayama”, and so SUNtamatama remained in Okayama.

This is SUNtamama below:
