I promised an updated post about the stuff Alex Hirsch is doing (and no longer doing) so here it is. this is current as of 11/16/2018. what’s this guy up to now?

current confirmed projects:

• story consultant on Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse – originally announced early last year. Alex confirmed on twitter that he did a small amount of script writing for the film, and he’s excited to see the finished product. watch the latest trailer here, and catch it in theaters December 14th.
• exclusive contract with Netflix – the big news from earlier this year: after signing an exclusive, multi-year overall deal with Netflix, Hirsch joined the growing roster of talented artists who are slated to create animated series and features for the streaming giant. Netflix is also launching a new in-house animation studio and debuted a trailer showcasing their lead artists, including Glen Keane, James Baxter, Shion Takeuchi, and Jorge R. Gutierrez (to name a few).

having followed Hirsch’s career up to this point, I’m personally very excited to see what comes from this deal with Netflix. it’s stated by some of the artists in the video that Netflix is a studio that trusts it’s creators and gives them the freedom to tell their own stories, qualities which Hirsch has previously said he values in a studio. and considering some of the hurdles he faced from various departments while working with Disney, I’m interested to see what Hirsch will do with more room to move around, so to speak.

whatever is announced by Netflix and Hirsch next, I’ll write about it here.

debunked/previously reported/rumors:

• not a screenwriter for Detective Pikachu – with the recent release of the first trailer, Hirsch clarified on twitter that despite early reports, he did not ultimately write the script for the film. Hirsch stated he was “asked to be involved in early talks, but left early on to pursue other projects.” 
• possibly a Gravity Falls art book – this is a rumor that has been circulating for a while, but there are a few (since deleted) tweets from Hirsch himself that back it up (thanks to @eregyrn-falls​ for archiving this!). GF fans have wanted an art book since before the series ended, hopefully this is something we’ll get to see soon!
• secret movie – for some time now, Hirsch has referenced a secret dream movie project he’s been working on—since his Netflix contract includes feature-length projects, this could be something we see in the future! but for now, details of those projects are under wraps, so only time will tell.
