Practicing coming up with story compositions, I listened to an episode of Amnesty and painted a small image every day. I drew both landscapes and characters like the gate to Sylvain, Aqualung, and Mama’s office. The first few days I struggled to get anything down; only pencil drawings. After about a week, I was able to get a good value structure down quickly and play with color and mood. The practice that helped me the most was laying down a perspective grid before I drew so that I had a better sense of how objects should recede in space. Keeping it to three values initially also kept me focused on clear shape design.
My favorite one is the painting of Jake Cool Ice, Danni, and Aubrey on the ski lift– though I’m not sure why I put Jake in the middle. Maybe he’s oblivious to the romantic tension between the other two?
